Iceland donates US$1 million to UNICEF towards empowering adolescent mothers in Uganda

The 18 months partnership will allow UNICEF to link teenage mothers to protection, health, education, childcare and skilling services; provide mentorship and life-skills to teenage mothers; support low -cost early childhood education (ECD)   models in targeted communities and establish mobile early childhood development units and disability inclusive ECD kits to provide early learning opportunities for children in hard-to-reach communities. Sex workers ask Ugandan authorities to declare violence against women a national disaster

  By Umar Weswala: Ubuntu's Caroline leading the placard protest  against Femicide in Uganda Female sex workers under the Network of Key Population Service Organisations (UNESO) and in collaboration with Ubuntu Law and Justice Center (UBUNTU) have asked the government of Uganda to declare Violence against women (including Femicide) a national disaster. This was contained in their joint press statement issued during a press conference held in Kampala on 8 th March in commemoration of this year’s international women’s day. Police and media reports show that vulnerable women, especially female sex workers still face horrific levels of violence from their purported clients and some security operatives who treat them as outlaws. In the last three months alone, UNESO reports that 8 sex workers were murdered but despite several arrests made, security agencies are yet to conduct a thorough, impartial and independent investigations into these murders. Private facilities charge highly for such services and public facilities are either distant or the health workers stigmatize the sex workers seeking medical care. Danish Government launches UGX 55 billion empowerment and rights program in Uganda

The two Sub Regions are grappling with alarming Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) indicators, adversely impacting the education, health, and development prospects of young girls. The program dubbed Strengthening Adolescents and Youth (SAY) Empowerment and Rights was unveiled yesterday during an agreement signing ceremony between the Danish Government and UNFPA at the Royal Embassy of Denmark in Kampala. Ambassador Signe Winding Albjerg signed on behalf of the Danish government and Ms. Gift Malunga, the Country Representative signed on behalf of UNFPA. It is a four-year initiative set to run from January 2024 to December 2027 with a budget allocation of USD 14,500,000 (about UGX 55,000,000,000)...

Post Abortion Care is Health Care – Dr. Kakaire

Dr. Kakaire was speaking yesterday at a closeout meeting for the Advocacy for Prevention of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity (APMM) project which has been running for the past five years with funding from the federation of International Gynecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO). Museveni endorses new UN-Uganda Joint adolescent and youth program

This happened yesterday at Kigezi Primary School Lower Grounds in Kabale Municipality during the national commemoration of this year’s International Youth Day. The US$22 million Uganda-UN Joint Adolescent and Youth Program (UNYJP) involving 13 UN agencies will address youth related actions under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).
